Sport

Sport is significantly important for the physical growth and development of our students, and enhances their social, emotional and cognitive dimensions of health.

Here at Good Shepherd Catholic College we are focused on providing a holistic approach to education in a Catholic environment that embodies health, positivity and wellbeing. The College offers a range of sporting opportunities that encourage our school community to flourish and broaden our students’ experiences through sport and exercise education. Students are not only encouraged to maintain involvement in sporting events within the College, but also within the broader community.

Sport and recreation play a significant role in the development of a student’s health and wellbeing:

  • It provides a chance to be physically active and enhance overall fitness
  • It gives the opportunity to be involved in social situations and team building
  • It is mentally stimulating and has been proven to help people focus as a result of exercise
  • It can improve student’s moods and application to everyday activities
  • It allows students to broaden their values and beliefs through the experiences they have - especially in team and community environments

Sporting opportunities that the College offer directly are:

GSCC Rugby League team - Our College Rugby League team has the opportunity to participate in different competitions including: The Confraternity Cup, The Columba Catholic School’s tournament in Charters Towers and an annual local Tri-Series competition.

GSCC Netball Club - Participation in both local and interstate competitions, including: The Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball competition (QISSN), Mount Isa local Netball through various age groups: Years 7 - 12.

Athletics/Swimming Carnival - Students are provided the opportunity to be involved in individual and group competition during our annual Athletics and Swimming Carnivals. This involves a day specifically set out for competition, school spirit and GSCC community involvement. There are also additional opportunities for students to participate in different activities throughout the day

Basketball Development - In the past year, we have offered an opportunity for students to be engaged in and learn the fundamental skills of basketball. There is significant interest surrounding basketball here at GSCC. The students who are involved in this benefit greatly from the skill development that occurs through participation in team sport.

Students are also encouraged and supported should they choose to pursue greater representative opportunities with the Mount Isa Secondary Sports. Association (MISSA) and also North West (NW) representative sports.
